President's Message
Hello Again,
As we approach June I think it’s safe to say that winter is behind us, finally. The golf course, which was snow covered a week or so ago, isn’t quite green but most of the snow is gone. My front lawn has almost reappeared (along with a snow shovel, a pair of mittens and our Christmas tree). I’m told that this has been an epic winter. I hope so.
Nevertheless things have been happening. As you’ll see inside, Lake Grant has been significantly enlarged through dredging during the worst of our winter, the boat lay down area expanded and the picnic pavilion expansion is well under way. With the dredging and an aggressive weed eradication program in Lake Grant we hope that the weed problem of 2007 will be solved. Unfortunately we were not allowed to dredge the boat lay down area as it is too close to the dam so we were unable to retrieve shoes lost in the mud while launching your boats! However, several yards of gravel have been added to the lake bottom in that area and should improve the situation.
I’ve been predicting that the bicycle/pedestrian path would be extended for two years now and something has prevented that from happening each time. I’ll give it one more try. Easements have been obtained, wetland permits granted and contractor bids are in to extend the path up to Lake Grant. As for the bridge over the Slate River, I’m not as confident. While the county has budgeted funds to install the bridge, I’m skeptical that it will still be available when they have fully assessed the damage to roads, etc. resulting from this past winter.
As you might expect, we believe that building in Skyland will slow down this year. At the moment it appears that construction on 4 houses will begin.
Once again the Crested Butte Bank’s triathlon will start and end in Skyland with the swimming portion in Lake Grant. That event will occur on July 27th.
The annual meeting and picnic will be on July 6th. Hope to see you there.

Projects! Projects! Projects!
It has been a busy year! While Crested Butte experienced near record snowfall this year, we were still able to do a few things other than push snow around. Planning for many summer projects took place and below is a quick overview of what we are doing this summer.
Skyland Metropolitan District
As mentioned in the President’s Message, we completed the Dredge Project at Lake Grant this winter. Approximately 2,200 dump trucks removed 22,000 cubic yards of dirt from the lake, increasing the depth of the shoreline on the north and west sides and increasing water storage capacity by about 13.5 acre feet (nearly 4.4 million gallons). We will be adding new Rainbow Trout in early June, so the fishing (hopefully weed-free) should be good this summer. Please be careful as the depth of the water is much deeper after the dredging!
The District has submitted to the State Engineer and State Water Court an application for additional and new water rights. Over the past few years, we were fortunate to find significant water to supplement Decker Springs and we are currently engaged in the process of putting that water to “beneficial use” via the State Water Court process. We hope to have this process completed by year’s end.
East River Regional Sanitation District
The District will be upgrading the Aeration and Disinfection Processes at the Treatment Plant this summer. The project is scheduled to start August 1st and be finished in 90 days. The District, with assistance from Wright Water Engineers, Inc. in Denver, continues to fine-tune the Wastewater Master Plan.
Skyland Community Association
Bill LaDuke mentioned several projects that the Association is participating in. The Club Cottages Bike/Pedestrian Path has started and will be complete by the 4th of July. The path (and associated bridge) from the Post Office to the Slate River is tentatively scheduled for this fall. The county has secured the funds and is currently working on delineation and mitigation of wetlands. Skyland plans on paving the path to the bridge and the path will provide a safe and fun way to get to town! Now we just need to wait for the river to recede. The Pavilion upgrade is scheduled to be complete by June 13th. Skyland staff will be “sprucing” up the landscaping and gardens at the same time and after construction is complete.
Skyland Website
www.skylandonline.com
Our website has been up and running for about a year now. It is a great source of information about Skyland! We have received many positive comments and are always looking for ways to improve the content. Please take a moment to view it and provide any feedback on ways to improve it and make it more “user friendly”.
Golf Course News
Each year we provide a quick note about the Golf Course. At press time for this year’s newsletter, snow still remains on certain areas of the Course. However, Steve Rau and his crew are working hard to open up as soon as feasible. A new Irrigation Pump House will be constructed in early June and will be located just north of the existing one near Lake Grant. And, please remember that dogs are not allowed on any portions of the Course!
Thank You! from Frank
It is never easy to say goodbye! I am leaving Skyland in late June. My family and I are moving to Steamboat Springs. I will be the General Manager for ResortQuest Steamboat and managing short-term rental properties and associations at the base of the mountain. This is a great “career” opportunity for me and my family is excited about the change. We have lived in Crested Butte for 8 years and have enjoyed our stay here. I have worked at Skyland for almost 6 years and will miss it!
With that said, I would like to thank everyone for the support, guidance and especially the friendship. This position has been rewarding since day one and I am proud of everything the Skyland Team has accomplished during my tenure here. Grant, Nola, Jarrett and Chris (new full-time summer worker) will continue to keep Skyland looking great and provide professional assistance as needed!
Skyland is a great community with owners and board members committed to improving the quality of life and making Skyland the premier place to live in Gunnison County. I will be at the Annual Meeting in July and hope to see you there.
District and Association Board Meetings
District Meeting News
The Skyland Metropolitan and East River Regional Sanitation Districts normally meet the third Wednesday of each month. The start time is 4:00pm and the place is at the Skyland Lodge, Suite 112A.
Gary Garland, a long-time member of the Skyland Metro District board and the East River District board, did not seek re-election this year when his term was up. Both Districts would like to thank Gary for his many years of service. Patrick Golden ran unopposed for Gary’s seat on both District boards. He will begin serving in May.
Design Review Meeting News
The Skyland Design Review Committee meets one time per month, however, the date changes monthly. Contact the management office at (970) 349-7411 for meeting dates and times. The Design Review also meets in the Skyland Lodge.
Community Association Meeting News
The Skyland Community Association Board meets less often (4-6 times per year). They also meet in the Lodge.
Keep up to date on the “happenings” in the community by attending a meeting and or visiting the website to view monthly agenda items.
Design Review Update
The Design Guidelines for Skyland were recently updated on March 18th, 2008. If you are planning on building a home or looking to complete an exterior remodel to your home, please make sure you review the latest guidelines. They are available on the website (www.skylandonline.com) or in the management office. The Design Guidelines are a “Living Document” and may be modified periodically throughout the year, thus please contact the management office to insure you have the latest version prior to preparing plans for your new home or remodel.
Summer Watering
Effective this summer, watering of lawns and gardens has been modified. The day you water is now based on the last digit of your physical address. Even-numbered addresses water on even number dates and odd-numbered addresses water on odd number dates. The watering times remain the same (12:01am to 10:00am and 4:00pm to 12:00pm on your day). Please remember to turn off irrigation systems when the rains come and program watering schedules (durations of each zone) to maintain your lawns and gardens, while at the same time conserving as much water as possible.
Weeds
<
Grant and the crew are geared up to start spraying noxious weeds again this summer. We started this program a few years ago and it has proven successful! Unfortunately, the weeds continue to grow and we will spray common and open space areas as needed. If you are interested in having us “spot spray” the noxious weeds (mostly chamomile daisies) on your property, please contact our office to get on the schedule. The cost is equal to $25.00 per application
Lake Grant
We are scheduled to add more Rainbow Trout to Lake Grant this summer. This should assist the anglers in fine-tuning their skills. Additional grass-eating carp will also be added to help eradicate the weeds in the lake.
Direct Pay (ACH)
Looking for an easy way to pay your water and sewer bills? Skyland Metropolitan District and East River Regional Sanitation District both offer the Direct Pay or ACH program. It is very easy to enroll. Once you are signed up, your water and sewer charges will automatically be deducted from your bank account on the due date (the last day of each month for water and the last day of each quarter for sewer). Please contact Nola to sign up for automatic payments to pay your water and sewer bills.
